Mumbai: — The Maharashtra government has approved a new state education policy that introduces several structural changes to the school curriculum, including making Hindi a compulsory third language across schools.
In a key move aimed at aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the state cabinet has decided that all students in Maharashtra will now study three languages, with Marathi and English remaining compulsory, and Hindi added as a mandatory third language from early grades. The decision is expected to affect schools across all boards, including state, CBSE, ICSE, and international institutions operating within Maharashtra.
The new language policy will be rolled out in phases, beginning with Grade 1 in the upcoming academic year, and expanding to higher grades in subsequent years.
This move makes Maharashtra one of the latest states to introduce mandatory Hindi in the curriculum, reflecting the growing push toward a multilingual but nationally cohesive education system.
